LIRR #6240 - LIRR Expansion Project Floral Park to Hicksville
The LIRR Expansion Project will introduce 9.8 miles of a new third track, close dangerous grade crossings and upgrade stations along this heavily traversed corridor.
According to the MTA, the construction of a third track from Floral Park to Hicksville will reduce train congestion and delays and enable true bi-directional service during peak hours with a more reliable rail network. This extensive work includes several related projects, including the construction of five parking garages, retaining walls, improvements to rail bridges and the removal of eight street-level grade crossings.
Contractors began designing, surveying, mobilization, utility relocations, and other early construction activities in January 2018. Community outreach efforts such as developing clear communications protocols, opening a public information office, continuing coordination with local elected officials, and soliciting input on the aesthetics of components such as stations and sound walls, continued during this time. Substantial construction of the project began in late 2018.
PRI is involved in numerous aspects of this massive project. The company was initially involved with designing and installing an updated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System for the Supervisory Control in JCC as well as numerous interlocking locations along the track in Queens and Nassau. The new SCADA software reflects the additional third track being installed between Floral Park and Hicksville.
In addition, PRI furnished, tested, and installed a new Motor Generator System and Mobile Substation for the LIRR to use along this line. PRI is also working with nVent RAYCHEM to supply third rail heaters. The installation of these new heaters will prevent the third rail from freezing and help the trains remain powered through their travels along the Main Line.
PRI is excited to be a part of such an important project that will reduce road congestion, improve safety, and provide an appealing alternative to driving for Long Island residents and commuters. The LIRR Expansion Project is expected to be completed by late 2022.
