LIRR CS179 East Side Access Project
East Side Access is the MTA’s largest capital project. The finished project will provide Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) riders with 40 miles of new tracks, a new terminal beneath Grand Central, and the modernization of the busiest intersection of passenger train lines in North America.
East Side Access is the first expansion of the LIRR in more than 100 years. This expansion is meant to support the growing population on Long Island by connecting all 11 LIRR lines to Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station. The project will also help save commuters to Manhattan’s East Side up to 40 minutes of travel time per day.
According to the MTA, up to half of Long Island commuters are expected to go to Grand Central, so there will be less crowding at Penn Station and the surrounding subway lines. East Side Access will also create a faster connection to JFK Airport. It will increase peak-hour capacity, and — in combination with the Double Track and LIRR Expansion Project — it will make true reverse commuting between Manhattan and Long Island a reality.
PRI’s scope for this project included the fabrication, testing, delivery, and onsite commissioning of two motor generator (MG) signal power systems. Located at Grand Central Station and Queens Plaza, these systems are responsible for providing 2400V for the signal power systems in the East Side Access tunnel system. PRI also fabricated and supplied four electronically operated (EO) remote panels and four 30A 600V non-fused disconnect switches as part of this project.
