NYCT E-34029 - Replacement of Six Traction Elevators at Two Locations 181st Street & 190th Street Stations

The MTA’s Replacing Elevators in Upper Manhattan Project focuses on removing and replacing elevators at 168th St, 181st St, and 191st St on the 1 train, as well as 181st St and 190th St on the A train, which have been in service since the stations first opened in the early 1900s. With over 80 years of use and some water damage, the elevators became increasingly unreliable.

Since 2019, the MTA and its project partners have worked to remove elevator equipment at each station and replace it with new elevator systems within the existing shafts. These new elevators aim to provide faster, more reliable service; reduce crowding with additional points of entry at 168 St 1 station and 191 St 1 station, and wider doors at 181 St on the A train; provide security with two CCTV security cameras in each elevator; use new technology to allow the MTA to quickly and precisely respond if an elevator malfunctions; and add a back-up power supply to allow customers to exit the elevator if there is a loss of power to the station.

PRI’s scope for this project includes supplying new CCTV cameras, network equipment, and CCTV cabinets at both 181st and 190th St Stations (A Line).

The new CCTV security and network equipment are meant to assist in modernizing and restructuring the 181st and 190th St Stations so that they are ADA accessible/compliant and more secure for travelers. The updated stations will allow nearly anyone to travel up the west side of Manhattan and access the beauty of Fort Tryon Park as well as the history and artwork showcased at the Met Cloisters, located inside the park.

In the summer of 2021, PRI’s engineers integrated 10 new ADA cameras in and around the new elevators at the 181st St Station into the existing Fiber Optic Network and supplied a brand-new CCTV as well as other equipment to aid elevator functionality.

Toward the end of 2021, our engineers completed testing and integrating the new CCTV Cabinet, ADA CCTV Cameras, ADA Intercoms, and PSLAN Network at 190th St Station (A Line).

The company takes great pride in helping expand the subway’s accessibility and looks forward to updating and integrating more ADA stations across the metropolitan region in the future.
